Mentorship

Passionate educators for lifelong learners.

The leadership of Geisinger Internal Medicine Residency is dedicated to assuring that our residents can fulfill their professional aspirations and prosper in all their endeavors. We believe that mentor relationships play in integral role in success. To this end, we have designed a multi-pronged approach to assisting residents in achieving fellowship, career, and professional goals.

  • "Buddy" System

    • Every intern will be paired with an upper level as their designated "buddy" to help answer questions about the move and transition to the program.

  • Double Upper Levels

    • During the months of July and August, our inpatient teams will have 2 upper levels so that each can dedicate their time to a specific intern which can help ease the transition into their respective new roles.

Senior resident, Dr. Raj Kuppuraju, and his intern, Dr. Jesse Calestine, took the "buddy" system to heart with matching outfits.

  • Associate Program Director Mentor

    • Based on interest and needs, you are assigned an Associate Program Director (APD) to mentor you from day one of your intern year. Your APD meets with you at regularly-scheduled intervals and is available to you as needed.

    • They will serve as a “career coach” by reviewing your CV and personal statement, assisting in interview preparation, as well as guide you in establishing a mentor in your chosen career path whether that be fellowship, primary care, or hospital medicine.

    • APDs and our PGY3s participate in mock interviews in order to prepare our residents before interview season begins.

  • Program Director Meetings

    • Dr. DiMarino's open-door policy provides residents with ample opportunities to meet and discuss personal and professional development. She also takes the time to schedule regular "check-ins" with each resident to ensure they are thriving. Lastly, our program director is a great resource for connecting residents with mentors in specific fields of interests which can help with research and fellowship opportunities.

  • Subspecialty Mentor

    • Geisinger Internal Medicine Residents have been immensely successful at matching into the fellowship of their choice. A large reason for this is the relationships established with the subspecialties here at Geisinger. Once a subspecialty mentor has been established, you will have the opportunity to meet regularly with that mentor, who will provide you with guidance in making yourself a competitive applicant in your match cohort.

    • Each year, Geisinger’s fellowship directors also come to noon conference to provide fellowship advice and guide your way forward.

  • Geisinger Internal Medicine Alumni Network

    • One of the advantages of being around since 1955 is that we have an enormous alumni network who are available as valuable resources for the future generations of Internal Medicine physicians. Our alumni span across the country, and some have even taken their talents overseas! This means that whatever your passion, we can connect you with someone who can act as a guide for your future career plans.
